Galaxies at 'cosmic noon': Research gives deep dive into universe's wild growth spurt
A new University of Kansas survey of distant galaxies using the James Webb Space Telescope reveals never-before-seen star formation and black hole growth at "cosmic noon"—a mysterious epoch 2–3 billion years after the Big Bang, when galaxies like the Milky Way underwent an intense growth spurt.
The results of the MIRI EGS Galaxy and AGN (MEGA) survey appear on the arXiv preprint server and soon will be published by The Astrophysical Journal.
According to KU researchers, galaxies were churning out new stars so intensely during cosmic noon that all galaxies today owe half their stellar mass to stars forged during this epoch. The KU team is seeking public participation in determining the shapes of galaxies and looking for galaxy mergers. Any member of the public can classify galaxies in the Cosmic Collisions Zooniverse project.
"Our goal with this project is to conduct the largest JWST survey in the mid-infrared across multiple bandwidths," said principal investigator Allison Kirkpatrick, associate professor of physics & astronomy at KU, who led the survey work.
"We are the premier mid-infrared survey to date. The mid-infrared is where dust emits, so we're looking at dust-obscured galaxies. Dust hides a lot of things, and we want to peer behind the dust. We want to understand how these galaxies are forming stars, how many stars they're forming and especially how the black holes at their centers are growing."
Using the JWST's much-enhanced power in the mid-infrared spectrum, the KU-led team gazed through this cosmic dust to observe galaxies sufficiently far away that arriving light had left their stars during cosmic noon, 10 billion years in the past. They sought to learn more about galaxies with active galactic nuclei (or, supermassive black holes that are rapidly growing in size) in a galaxy-rich deep field near the Ursa Major constellation, considered a "clean window" for extragalactic observation called the "Extended Groth Strip."
"The Extended Groth Strip is a region of the sky that has now become one of the premier JWST fields," Kirkpatrick said. "I was on the proposal that received the very first data from the James Webb Space Telescope. This survey is called CEERS—Cosmic Evolution Early Release Science. We got the first images from JWST, and they were of the Extended Groth Strip. Within this region, we're able to see about 10,000 galaxies—even though the area is only roughly the diameter of the moon."
Lead author Bren Backhaus, postdoctoral researcher in physics & astronomy at KU, pored through the impressive amount of new JWST data and worked with raw images to produce usable scientific images and information useful to the astronomy community.
"In theory, a galaxy could show up in one image and not another because we're using different filters," Backhaus said. "It's like taking pictures using only red, blue or green light—which eventually create very pretty images. But because the telescope is moving slightly, the images are a little out of frame with each other. The first step is simply receiving the images. The next step involves correcting for known issues with the telescope. For example, there's a known scratch that appears in every image, and there are dead pixels. The first task is to fix or at least tell the software to ignore those pixels."
Next, Backhaus aligned the separate images, giving them a reference for how they should overlap. Her final step was to combine the images properly relative to one another.
"I was doing all of that to create our science-ready images," Backhaus said. "Then, my next goal was to make a catalog—finding a measurable amount of light and recording how much light is coming in through a given filter to support our larger publication. That was my primary work with the data, and I was really excited because I had never worked with photometry data before. It really expanded my skill set, and I got to see beautiful galaxies before anyone else."
Up to now, the KU-led collaboration has logged 67 hours commanding the JWST. The project recently received approximately 30 more hours of telescope time. Data will be used at KU for research and training for a time before being made available publicly.
"This is the largest amount of JWST data we've been able to bring to KU with a principal investigator here, which means KU students have exclusive use of this data for now," Kirkpatrick said. "It's not public yet. The way telescope time works is that because so much effort goes into writing a proposal, you're given a year of exclusive use of the data. Then it gets released into a public database, but only as raw data. Anyone can access it, but they'd have to do their own processing, which has taken months in our case."
For the time being, only KU physics and astronomy researchers can access "this beautiful dataset," Kirkpatrick said.
Ongoing research includes finding the galaxies that could be the ancestors of Milky Way-like galaxies today—visible for the first time in the mid-IR thanks to MEGA, measuring how rapidly galaxies form stars and grow their black holes, and looking at how galaxies change their appearance due to mergers over time. All of these projects give researchers an unprecedented look at how galaxies like the Milky Way have "grown up."
"All my students are working on it," she said. "It's a really unique thing for KU right now."

i have no idea what i'm doing!
learning computer vision concepts on your own is overwhelming, and it's even more overwhelming to figure out how to apply those concepts to train a model and prepare your own data from scratch.
context: the public university i go to expects the students to self-study topics like AI, machine learning, and data science, without the professors teaching anything TT
i am losing my mind
based on what i've watched on youtube and understood from articles i've read, i think i have to do the following:
data collection (in my case, images)
data annotation (to label the features)
image augmentation (to increase the diversity of my dataset)
image manipulation (to normalize the images in my dataset)
split the training, validation, and test sets
choose a model for object detection (YOLOv4?)
training the model using my custom dataset
evaluate the trained model's performance
so far, i've collected enough images to start annotation. i might use labelbox for that. i'm still not sure if i'm doing things right 🥹
if anyone has any tips for me or if you can suggest references (textbooks or articles) that i can use, that would be very helpful!

**Biological = biological organism, even if it was biologically engineered instead of naturally occurring (like if you were to grow an organ from scratch (e.g, the heart of nova?). That could imply their abilities that one might consider magic (such as portals) are innate to their biology (like Elfilis's possibly are?).

I was typing up some of my own headcanons about the novas and it got me really curious about what other people think... There's a lot of different options and they've been bouncing around in my brain.
For one, I hope to gather data about how people think the magic system works in kirby. For example, is magic something any creature, even a computer, can learn and perform? Or are specific races/species/artifical beings not able to perform magic with knowledge alone, due to things like their biology? Depending on what you think, the nature of the clockwork stars changes...
I'm a subscriber to the latter theory, but I think it's both possible to "unlock" the ability to perform magic - for example, being possessed by dark matter - and to "use" magic through the use of a magical tool. If the novas were simply built with a magic component installed, granting wishes isn't exactly out there.
There's also the question about *why* the novas were built by the ancients. One of my headcanons is that they're basically the ancient's "cloud" - a big computer network that holds all of the ancient's computer data, libraries of knowledge, and maybe even all their magical data. This data was so extensive it therefore allowed them the knowledge to grant wishes...
I also can't remember where I saw this, but I remember seeing a theory about how the heart of nova resembles the jamba heart and how they could've been used as Incubators to grow the various spawns of void. That's too cool...
I also have so many questions about how Haltmann built star dream. What resources did he use, how difficult were they to find, did he use any substitute materials? Why does star dream's heart look different to Galactic Nova's?
Were the scientific ancients so advanced that they could create *computers* that grant wishes? Is it simply science so advanced that it's beyond our human comprehension? Or else, did Haltmann need to use magic (whatever that would involve) in order to built Star Dream? Was there a biological component Haltmann needed to engineer or FIND in order to complete it?
Anyway, I hope to do more polls like this. I'm hopefully going to be less busy in the summer and I can talk about kirby a lot.

OKAY I NEED TO ADRESS THIS WORLD BUILDING AND QUESTIONS ON BLEACH
My autism is screaming at me for MONTHS about a certain detail I'm sure NOT EVEN KUBO HIMSELF CARES ENOUGH BUT OH WELL, and I need the other people in this fandom to help me get a simple explanation or I'll snap so @princessandshopkeeper @uraharashouten (my 2 fav blogs still active somehow that I know of bleach)
THE CULTURE IN SOUL SOCIETY
Okay basically my issue with this is really fucking simple, some characters like Yoruichi for example CLEARLY have an ethnicity and background from another country to them, BUT it's never really shown in depth or talked about it, all Soul society is like almost strictly japanese based and that bothers me SO MUCH
Cause Shinigami live a LONG TIME, hell almost ageless/immortal and not only can Shinigami be born in soul society but people BECOME Shinigami in the afterlife or even when alive, so HOW THE HELL isn't Soul society extremely culturally diverse and complex??? Like there's no way the first Shinigami were only japanese or something, and yeah you can say it's because the souls slowly forget their time when alive and it becomes more instinct/a blur, but there's no way they didn't bother to share their culture or anything before forgetting, plus Shinigami must travel the whole entire world due to hollows and so on, HOW NOT A SINGLE SHINIGAMI got influenced by the outside and brought that as a change to Soul society???
Hell I'm thinking about this more than kubo ever did but COME ON, wouldn't it be interesting to see a lively and full of other countries and IT'S OWN CULTURE SHAPING Soul society? PLUS perhaps Shinigami using all languages or CREATING A NEW LANGUAGE FROM SCRATCH that only them could use/learn? Which hey would be a lot more safer considering no mortal could communicate or get access to info only Shinigami should have, which would make a lot more sense in this type of society BUILD AS A WHOLE SINCE HUMANITY START
And hey it's fine if they choose a language already created, but WHY japanese? In my eyes latin should be used due to being what originated a lot of other languages and so on, picking what CREATED the languages not THE language itself
IT COULD GO AS FAR AS EXPANDING the SS to multiple Soul societies or seireitei of different countries and cultures they could all create some sort of fast travel to get there, like idk, japanese Soul society, Italian soul society, Brazilian soul society, and then the main one connecting everything like we see in the anime/manga as the actual soul society

I LOVE that it's based in a traditional japanese setting and hell even some Buddhist kinda of look (I went recently to a Buddhist temple really famous here in Brazil and it looked so much like a building in the seireitei) BUT how isn't Soul society more technology advanced? Like damn, again, ageless, immortal (kinda), a lot of new souls getting there, new generations left and right, HOW IS THERE NO SCIENTIFIC REGISTER?? LIKE MAN, WHY IT HAD TO TAKE URAHARA TO BE BORN TO SCIENCE START BEING A FOCUS THERE??? In my view SS should have at least GOOD AMOUNT of new tech because of the conditions Shinigami are in, OR AT LEAST some type of register of scientific researchers and so on, HELL LET'S GO EVEN FURTHER, WHY THE SHINIGAMI ACADEMY DOESN'T HAVE A SCIENCE COURSE? OR an academy focused 100% only on technology, science, physiology and so on? It's so useful and would sure as hell help the Aizen incident not happen again due to having more brilliant minds to help in situations like this.
ALSO picture an AU of a Shinigami science academy and a teacher Kisuke teaching a class all about armament and Shinigami war gear technology and like their bimester project is an attempt of gigai or something and he's a teacher that everyone loves- ANYWAY

Hello, I hope this message finds you well,
I'm a massive fan of the podcast! I don't know who else to ask conlang related questions. I found this pdf by Rick Morneau, Designing an Artificial Language: Vocabulary Design, on fiat lingua. Do you know if there are any more materials about vocab design like this? I don't want to create a clone of english/japanese/esperanto with fake words, and the field of linguistics is so deep and theoretical that I want to create something realistic, more realistic than a naming language (however I fear sound changes are to complicated for me) I have copies of Morphosyntax and The Art of Grammar and even Linguistics for Dummies, so I think I understand the basics but creating a language from scratch isn't normal. I think I'm not enjoying it because I don't understand the science enough but at a certain point the science is too dense for a rookie. If expert linguists can't agree on the definition of a sentence how am I suppose to make a whole language? How do nouns/verbs/adjectives/phrases/clauses/questions work? Listen, there is definitely a learning curve to conlanging. You don’t have to get a PhD to get started, but it is helpful to have a good foundation in linguistics.
I might suggest you look more into resources made specifically for conlanging, as they’ll tend to approach it in terms of how you can use these ideas creatively. Books like The Art of Language Invention or The Language Construction Kit come to mind, or Biblaridion’s YouTube series How to Make a Language.
I don’t have other resources in mind specifically teaching vocabulary creation. Two tools I use are CLICS, which is a database of related concepts that will show you which meanings tend to have related words, and DatSemShift, which is more about words changing meaning, but also includes polysemies. I find that having their data to look at helps me find interesting opportunities for derivation and extra meanings that can help break out of the relex. Wiktionary is great, too, if you go to the translation section and happen to find a lot of good translations to compare definitions.
But the best way to learn is to just do it. Start creating a language and share bits in the community for feedback. As you find yourself needing to understand some structure or wanting to add some feature, research that in detail. You’ll find yourself going on Wikipedia dives and eventually reading academic papers (there’s lots of open access linguistics) just about the thing you’re interested in.

It is late and im ill at home so hyper specific rant coming up!
Shout out to field archaeologists who measure, those who conquered the gps/rts/total station. You are the backbone that is making it into a science.
I dont know how it is in other parts in the world but here, there is sometimes a stigma that the measuring pal is not doing real archaeology or as heavy a job as other fieldworkers because we are not constantly churning the dirt.
I would also like to scratch in the ground and scream out when I find cool stuff but I have less oprtunity cuz I´m too busy screaming at people to put their finds in bags and write down where it came from. Cuz guess what, your cool complete ceramic vessel? Useless, without its exact provenance. Throw it on the dump if you cant be bothered to care about registration!
´oh no i shant touch the gps, i´ll break it' well you wouldnt if you would take time to learn it. Might also make my job easier if you knew what goes into it all. ´cant you measure any faster?´ no i can measure as fast as technology allows me. Either you wait or you figure out the site without any carthographic data? no? Thought so.
Couple weeks ago a coworker came to me saying ´as the one measuring a site, i feel as the lowest lifeform present on the dig. No one asks if it´s going well or if i need help or how much time i am going to need. They just want everything done at once as fast as possible even though they forget to properly label shit half of time´. And i could relate to that. Since very few people know what you are doing exactly, nobody cares or offers help. They are just digging, throwing open bigger and bigger patches of dirt so they can say they excavated the largest amount of m2. At the end of the day they put away their shovel and expect everyone to do the same but the measurer? Still gotta work cuz you kept going till the last minute and there 10+ m2 left to register and 5 finds have no labels. Can´t leave them here for every passerby to just pick them up. And measure the rest later? What if it rains? What if a treasure hunter shows up digging holes in the night destroying the level with nothing left to register?
Where would you be without accurate measuring and registration? Right, nowhere cuz you would have lost all scientific validation.
So please, shows some appreciation for your local gps-archaeologists. They work just as hard and are just as tired or cold as any other fieldworker. Show some patience if things go not as fast as you´d like and ask if there is anything that might help like changing the excavation partition or asking someone to precheck all finds and features so they don´t lose time, hold an umbrella if it rains on a finnicky touchscreen, etc.
